D-O-N-E DONE!

DONE DONE DONE! I am DONE with insulin pens. I don't think I'm doing anything wrong with them. I'm following the instructions. I'm counting to 20- yes- TWENTY- after injecting her to make sure it all gets in her little body and insulin is STILL spilling onto her arm. And we are having horrible- awful- high numbers. Last night, she hung out in the 400's and woke up at 285. She came down to 155 at lunch, but after lunch she was 430! And...insulin spilled onto her arm even after I dosed her for half a unit more than she needed just in case that happened. We gave her a correction at snack time and she was down to 180 at dinner. What am I supposed to do...guess how much insulin made it inside and try to make up for it???
Sorry for my rant, but there is no NEED for these numbers. And it's NOT good for her. So there. That's it. I'm DONE.

Well, ya gave it an honest effort! That's more than I can say.

I have a friend who uses the pens to draw up insulin when filling the pump/or for injections. (There's a rubber stopper on it somewhere.) She says you can actually get more for your money if you use pens as opposed to vials, but I'm not exactly sure why. I just remember her mentioning it a couple times.

Well, now you know. We learn as we go and everyone's experience is different. I guess that's that.

Next?

I agree with you amy I hated those pens and dont think that they are better than syringes .I think you get so much more for your money . anyways I hope things get better .

I'm so sorry that you are having issues with the pens. We loved them, but Chrisotpher was much older than Jada. Maybe her little arm is just too small for them. You can pull insulin out of the pens with a syring. Just dial down the back after you pull the insulin out. :(

Run! Don't look back!
You'll find the right way for your little one! Diabetes is ALL about trial and error.
Good luck!

Do you know that I was looking back at Cara's numbers and there was two time that her numbers were perfect all day long. On those days Chris mom was watching her and I was SO mad I was thinking what the hell is she doing that I'm not? Then I figured it out she was using a syringe to give Cara her insulin because she does not know how to use the pens and we are using the pens. So we may be giving the pen up too!! We will see :)

I had trouble with the pens, too - they are supposed to be easier since you don't have to draw up insulin from the vial, but we always had leak-back. I've heard that the Lantus pen is especially difficult - it wasn't available when my daughter was still using Lantus. We only used the Novolog pens, and then the NovoPen Jr.

Wendy might be referring to me - we use the penfill cartridges for pump cartridge filling. I get more insulin for the same copay (1500 units in a box of cartridges as opposed to 1000 in a vial), and I like only having 300 units open at a time (each cartridge is 300 units - 5 per box). I also like the idea that if I drop it and it breaks, I've only lost 300 units as opposed to 1000. I leave one cartridge with the school nurse, can carry one around with me, etc. BTW, they aren't the actual PENS - the are the cartridges that go into the NovoPen Junior, which is refillable. So, that's the long story of why we do that. :)

I hope you find better success with your injections - I feel your frustration!

Avery HATED the pen. She Asked to go back to the syringes. I thought the pen left a larger mark on her little body. It's whatever works best for you-- here's hoping you find something you like that is also good for bg! Good luck!
