My Sick Boy

After a week of some crazy low blood sugars with Jada, this week has evened out to beautiful, perfect in range numbers. I'm enjoying it while I can, because I know it won't last! You just have to take those good days and love it and remember when the highs and lows come- it's not forever and those good days will come around again!
So....while Jada is doing great, Eli has become sick. He woke up around midnight on Wednesday with a pretty bad headache- and ibuprofen seemed to help and he was able to sleep. I thought it was sweet, because he wanted to lay on our floor next to my side of the bed. Obviously, he wasn't feeling well!
Yesterday morning, the headache just hung in there and he didn't move off the couch all day! Last night , he spiked a fever of 103! He hasn't had a fever that high since he was 2 years old! Ibuprofen and acetaminophen this time and within an hour, he was feeling better and actually got up and ate supper. He went to bed at least feeling comfortable!
Well, he woke up at about midnight with a temp of 104! More meds and was feeling better again with in the hour. He and I had some bonding time and then he went to bed, but woke up with a fever of 102. Still high, but better and he 's less achy this morning and no headache. So...let's hope this virus has run it's course. And.....let's hope no one else gets it!

Latest Update

Jada actually slept most of the night last night- which was great, because she really needed it and I did, too!  She woke up at 6 am with a temp of 102, a BG of 302 and moderate to large ketones. Grrr........  However, I'm not surprised she woke up with ketones like that because of her fever and high blood sugar.  So, she had a juice box  and two crackers for breakfast along with a rather large shot and her blood sugar has slowly been falling.  Her temp was taken care of by Tylenol and then she went back to sleep.  I think she slept from about 7 am until 9:30- and has been acting almost normal!  Yay!  I'm trying to keep ahead of the fever with meds and a little bit ago, I had to pull her away from digging in the fridge!  I told her that she could eat whatever she wanted (she's eaten crackers and juice for the last two days) but she hasn't made up her mind yet.  The ketones are still at a moderate level, but coming down and they aren't making her sick.
We've had a scary couple of days and it is such a relief to see her up and playing with her toys!  So much of her behavior these past two days have caused flashbacks to when she was diagnosed- not only for me, but Jeff as well.   I'm sure her temp will try to spike again this afternoon, but at least I can see our way through the woods now!

Sick!

Jada woke up yesterday morning with a slight fever of 100.3.  Checked ketones and she was showing a moderate amount in her urine.  Crap.  But- no tummy ache, which is always the sign of bad ketones for her.  So, we gave her ibuprofen and acetaminophen.  We changed our Memorial Day plans from driving about an hour away to spending the day at a friend's house just in case she got worse.  She did pretty well- her fever spiked again in the afternoon but after some ibuprofen, she was comfortable again.
Fast forward to last night.  Around 7 pm, she just took a downturn.  Her fever spiked again and we couldn't get her to eat or drink anything.  We checked ketones and there none (thank you God!) but she was miserable.  She started complaining about her ears and throat and started coughing.  We were up most of the night- checking blood sugar- which stayed high most of the night and she was feverish as well.  This morning we checked ketones and they again showed a moderate amount.  Her fever spiked to 103 and she was miserable for a while.  She's not hungry, but drank some juice and has asked for water a couple of times.  I'm thinking either ear infection or strep throat- but Jeff couldn't see any spots in the back of her throat when he looked last night.  Obviously, something is not right and I think she probably needs to be on antibiotics.  So.....we're headed off to the urgent care center this morning.  I'll post an update later!

Not What We Need Right Now

As Jeff and I were thinking about heading to bed last night,  Jada walked into the living room and cuddled up next to me.  Her cheeks were flushed a rosy pink and as I felt her hands, that sense of dread fell over me.  Fever.  Ugh.
Her blood sugar was a little high but okay for night time. Right at 214.  As a precautionary measure I checked urine ketones (she thinks it's a lot of fun to potty on the strip) and she didn't show any signs.  Her temperature was about 101.4 and still rising.  She wasn't upset and said she didn't feel bad.  So, I gave her some ibuprofen and laid down with her.  She wouldn't go back to sleep  because she was in a chatty mood! :)  If she wakes at night, she's usually mad at something and cries non-stop, so I know she didn't feel too bad.
This morning she crawled into bed with me at 7 am and felt just as feverish as last night.  We cuddled (love my morning cuddles with her) for a while and then got up and checked for ketones in her urine again.  And this time- she was showing a small amount.  Her fever is around 100- not too high, but we took some ibuprofen to stay ahead of the game.  I am SO GLAD that she's not vomiting!
Hopefully, she's just got a little virus that we can stay on top of.  Jeff is headed to the grocery store this morning to stock up on ibuprofen, acetaminophen and regular sprite in case she needs real sugar.  She's got a great appetite and we're waiting for her novolog to kick in so that she can eat.  I didn't see this coming- none of the other kids have been sick.  Actually, I'm glad that she's the first one, otherwise, I would have done nothing but worry!  I guess the only warning that I may have had was that her blood sugar hung out all yesterday afternoon in the low 200's.  Her lunchtime shot just didn't bring her down at all.
We'll see what today brings- it could be interesting.
